Planning to buy a camera-SLR.There are so many.Please help!

Aim:This is what I need my SLR for:
Pictures of my people-my baby and us :)
Random Home Gettogethers
Indian Dresses-Jewellery
Home Decor
My amateur cooking
Outdooor/Vacations.

Please advise which SLR should I buy.
Some said Canon ..Some Nikon...I'm all confused.
